Terra-Petra is an environmental consulting firm that has specialized in methane gas investigations, methane mitigation designs and brownfield remediation since 2002. The combined environmental remediation experience of our key associates exceeds 80 years.
A significant segment of the consulting performed by Terra-Petra is contracting with much larger environmental firms. We compliment their services by providing them with the advantages of cost effectiveness, specialized knowledge and our flexibility.
Other activities include Phase II investigations for chlorinated solvents, lead and asbestos. In conjunction with the Phase II investigations are our in-house designs for soil vapor gas extraction and vapor gas mitigation systems.
Methane Soil Gas
Investigation
Terra-Petra is diligent in its methodology during soil gas investigations, with the expectation that we, above all others, can obtain the most reliable data. It is the policy of Terra-Petra to assure that all methane soil gas investigations are verified by an independent third party laboratory. Among our other certifications and licenses, we hold certificate number 10224 with the Los Angeles Department of Building & Safety (LADBS) for conducting methane soil gas investigations.
Our methane plans are both comprehensive and concise, yet they are delivered in their simplest form to avoid unnecessary complication. The designs for methane mitigation and other soil vapor intrusion are in large format for clarity and for ease of understanding the complexities of mitigation systems—systems which are not a part of normal construction elements. These plans also include all pertinent specifications. It is the policy of Terra-Petra to provide our clients with Agency-approved mitigation plans, as a part of our services.
LADBS Deputy
Methane Barrier Inspectors
In addition to soil gas mitigation design, Terra-Petra also has 5 staff associates that are recognized by LADBS as Deputy Methane Barrier Inspectors (DMBI). Our deputy inspectors assure that the mitigation systems are installed per the approved plans and the prevailing codes. Often during the course of inspecting methane (soil gas) barrier membranes, the DMBI is inspecting the vertical, below-grade membranes which also double as damp-proofing or waterproofing for the structure. Because of their extensive experience, our inspectors are called upon to inspect the installation of waterproofing systems designed by other firms; or to perform inspections of methane and brownfield mitigation systems, which may have been designed by a firm other than Terra-Petra.
Below-Grade
Waterproofing
Since most of our methane and brownfield mitigation designs are for structures having below-grade parking elements, we have also become below-grade waterproofing experts. Some of our clients select Terra-Petra specifically for our waterproofing designs, for projects which are not in a methane or brownfield zone.
Brownfield Remediation
Terra-Petra has extensive experience in brownfield remediation, often referred to as vapor or soil vapor remediation. We have worked with many regulatory agencies including state, county, regional and city jurisdictions, and have attained a high degree of mutual respect with each of them. We believe that it is our congenial association and our timely and forthright manner which creates this special relationship. Terra-Petra is well versed in characterizing and remediating brownfield soils, including: oversight of soil and soil gas sampling, and laboratory reports; judicious interactions with the oversight Agencies; developing & monitoring groundwater wells; and as always, keeping the client informed of each aspect of our progress.
Terra-Petra has for years consulted on municipal waste landfills, to assure the owner/operator of regulatory compliance. We are actively involved in post-closure uses such as storage, recreational development and co-generation.
Environmental
Design & Consulting
We continue to consult for all types of buildings including: commercial (low & high rise), institutional (hospitals & schools), industrial (light & heavy), entertainment (theaters & attractions), multiple residential (apartments & condominiums), single family homes, hotels and mixed-use. The sites we have worked on have been impacted by: wetlands (marsh) conditions, organic-laden backfill, oil fields, landfills, leaking underground storage tanks, chemical spills, asbestos & lead, and occasionally a combination of these contaminant sources.
