Steven Maddox
Professional Geologist/Certified Hydrogeologist
With over 30 years of experience, Steven Maddox has worked throughout California and the west coast, the Midwest, Southeast and Eastern United States.
Steve began his career working as an Engineering Geologist in Southern California. His work includes numerous slope stability and landslide investigations, and preliminary geologic investigations prior to major construction projects. As a result he is very familiar with all of the major geologic formations in Southern California.
An Engineering Geologist for local private industry, Steve also worked for the City of Los Angeles where he was responsible for conducting geologic mapping throughout all of the hilly/mountainous regions of the City to identify any geologic threats to public safety.
After concluding his work with the City of Los Angeles, Steve was employed by the synthetic fuels division of Getty Oil Company (Getty Synthetic Fuels) as Superintendent of Exploration and Testing. In that position he supervised the testing of landfills in every geographic area of the United States, and in Canada. While employed at Getty Synthetic Fuels, he used his innovative talents to develop test crew procedure and safety manuals, sat on review boards, and administered a department budget of over three million dollars per year, coming in on-time and under-budget.
Following the purchase of Getty Oil Company by Texaco Oil Company, Steve worked as a geologist/hydrogeologist and as a regional manager for several local Southern California environmental engineering firms. During this time he worked for the Jacobs Engineering Group (JEG), based in Pasadena, California, as Manager of Field Services. All of his projects at JEG were for the United States Government. He conducted site evaluations and investigations at locations such as the Space Launch Complex Sites at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California and other locations such as Castle AFB (Merced, CA), China Lake Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons division (Ridgecrest, CA), and the Marine Corps Logistics Base, Barstow, California. While at JEG, Steve particularly enjoyed mentoring younger hydrogeologists in field techniques.
In 1996, Mr. Maddox founded Maddox & Associates, Inc. Most of his work at that time involved Phase I and Phase II site investigations and the preparation of Corrective Action Plans following site characterization. Additional projects included Phase IIIs (site remediation) and closures of sites contaminated by gasoline products and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Steve's site closure methods include the development of Site Conceptual Models (SCM)--to totally characterize the site in relation to the contaminant plume (soil and/or groundwater), the geologic structure in the site subsurface, and the relationship of the site to nearby sensitive receptors as well as the evaluation of the occurrence of Natural Attenuation, age dating of fuels, and stable isotope studies. Steve successfully obtained closure of a number of sites impacted by gasoline, diesel, aviation gasoline and jet fuel.
In recent years, Steve has been involved in sanitary landfill projects. Typical projects have been the planning, design, and installation of methane gas extraction wells, perimeter gas migration probes, and the installation of horizontal gas collection wells. He also supervised the installation of the new subsurface methane gas collection system at the Brea-Olinda landfill.
Steve Maddox is committed to doing the job right, and always working in the best interests of the client. We are honored to have him as an integral part of our growing Terra-Petra Environmental Engineering team.
